How to Properly Fit a Swimsuit

Swim Team Suits
As you shop for the right competition swimwear, make sure you choose the right fit.

Competition swimsuits require you to choose one that has the perfect fit. This type of fit is much different from what you would be looking for in your regular swimwear for recreational purposes. For instance, competition swimwear should fit more tightly than your average swimsuit, though it shouldn’t be so tight it impacts your ability to move. Tighter swimwear has a tendency to last longer. Learning how to properly fit your swimwear, such as Speedo swimsuits, will ensure you purchase the right size to maximize your efforts.

Torso

Your swimsuit should fit flat against your torso without causing any bunching or pulling from any other areas of the suit. While it is important that your suit is as flat as possible around your middle for optimal compression, it should never be too tight. If you try on the swimsuit and it is difficult to move freely, you may need to choose a larger size.

Legs

The opening around your legs should fit snugly but should not dig into your legs or bunch up around the edges. In addition to its fit around your legs, it is also important to make sure the suit you choose offers the right coverage in the back. In many cases, inadequate coverage means you should try a different Speedo swimsuit style rather than a larger size.

Shoulder Straps

The shoulder straps are another important aspect of a properly fitting competition swimsuit. Straps should lie flat against the shoulders without creating additional pressure or easily falling off the shoulder. To verify that your shoulder straps fit correctly, circle your arms a few times while you are wearing it to ensure there is no restriction on your movement and the straps don’t dig into your shoulders.

Chest

The final area you must pay attention to is the chest area. Competition swimsuits should offer optimal coverage in this area as well. The swimsuit should offer some compression in this area but shouldn’t flatten the bust too much. Raise your arms and move them around a bit to ensure the suit will offer the same coverage, no matter how you move.

Whether you choose a Speedo swimwear option or you choose other competition swimsuits, you need to make sure you purchase one that will fit well. If your swimsuit fits properly, you have a greater chance of doing well in the water so you can make the most of your training sessions and your races.
